Lesson 12 — Intermediate

Leadership Styles

Manager order deta hai, leader inspiration deta hai — aur kabhi kabhi dono ek hi insaan hote hain. Is lesson mein hum dekhenge leadership ke major styles, unke pros-cons, aur theories (trait, behavioral, contingency) jo exam aur interview dono mein poochhi jaati hain.

Leadership kya hai — leader vs manager

WHAT

Leadership ka matlab hai logon ko influence karna taki wo ek common goal ke liye voluntarily kaam karein. Leader VISION deta hai aur inspire karta hai; manager PLAN banata hai aur organize karta hai. Dono ka overlap hota hai par energy alag hai.

WHEN

Change ke waqt leadership chahiye (nayi disha, motivation), aur stability ke waqt management (process, consistency). Startup founder ko dono chahiye.

WHERE

Captain (cricket), founder (startup), party president (politics), ghar ke head — leadership har jagah dikhti hai. Title se nahi, influence se banti hai.

Peter Drucker ka line: Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. Manager sahi tareeka chalta hai, leader sahi cheez chunta hai.

Major leadership styles

AUTOCRATIC (authoritarian)
Decisions: leader akele | Communication: downward | Speed: fast
+ quick, clear, crisis mein best | - creativity kam, morale gir sakta

DEMOCRATIC (participative)
Decisions: team input se | Communication: two-way | Speed: medium
+ buy-in, better ideas, morale high | - slow, conflict possible

LAISSEZ-FAIRE (free-rein)
Decisions: team khud | Leader: minimal interference
+ experts ko azaadi, innovation | - chaos, direction missing

PATERNALISTIC : papa jaisa — care + strict (family firms mein common)
BUREAUCRATIC : rules book — compliance heavy (govt offices)
Kaunsa kab? Crisis = autocratic, routine team decision = democratic, highly skilled R&D team = laissez-faire. Style choose karna situation pe depend karta hai — ye situational view hai.

Leadership theories — trait, behavioral, contingency

Exam gold: "Is there a best leadership style?" — answer: nahi. Best style situation pe depend karti hai (contingency/situational view). Ye MBA interview ka favourite hai.

Blake-Mouton Managerial Grid

Blake & Mouton ke 2 axis: concern for PEOPLE (1-9) × concern for PRODUCTION (1-9)

(1,1) IMPOVERISHED : dono ka concern minimum — bas job bachaaye
(9,1) AUTHORITY-COMPLIANCE : production zyada, log kam — taskmaster
(1,9) CLUB MANAGEMENT : log zyada, production kam — sab khush, kaam nahi
(5,5) MIDDLE-OF-ROAD : balanced but average — dono thoda thoda
(9,9) TEAM MANAGEMENT : dono max — BEST style (commitment + results)

Grid ka message: log aur results ek doosre ke against nahi hain. (9,9) team management maana jaata hai ideal — jahan log apna maan ke, khud kaam karte hain.

Yaad rakho: Grid ke 5 styles ke naam + coordinates exam mein aate hain. Trick: pehla number = log ka concern, doosra = production ka. (9,9) best, (1,1) worst.

Exercise

Question: Laissez-faire style mein leader kitna involve hota hai — maximum ya minimum?

Question: Blake-Mouton grid mein BEST style ke coordinates kya hain? (jaise x,y format mein likho)

Question: Autocratic style mein decisions kaun leta hai — leader akela ya team milkar?

Common mistakes

Desi example: Startup founder ke 2 styles

Ek Bengaluru ke SaaS founder ko dekho — fundraising pitch mein autocratic (ek din mein decision), product discussion mein democratic (poori team), aur design team ko laissez-faire (khud explore karo):

text
Crisis (server down) : Autocratic — order, 5 min mein fix
Hiring (mid-level) : Democratic — panel feedback le kar
Design sprint : Laissez-faire — team khud explore
Lesson : style situation se choose hota hai
Exam mapping (CUET / UGC-NET / MBA)
  • CUET: autocratic vs democratic vs laissez-faire — classic 1-2Q.
  • UGC-NET: Fiedler contingency + Blake-Mouton grid coordinates.
  • MBA interview: "Tell about your leadership style" — situation ke saath example do.
  • Trap: "Democratic style is always best" — galat, contingency theory isi liye bani.
Lesson complete?

Leadership styles clear. Agla lesson — Motivation Theories (Maslow, Herzberg, McGregor) — jo interview ka sabse poochha hua topic hai.
