Lesson 4 — Beginner
Fayol's 14 Principles of Management
Henry Fayol ne 1916 mein 14 principles diye jo aaj bhi har management textbook mein hain. Ye principles koi rule nahi, general guidelines hain — is lesson mein har ek ko examples ke saath samjhenge aur wo traps bhi jo exam mein aate hain.
Henry Fayol kaun tha
WHAT
Henry Fayol (1841-1925) French mining company Commentry-Fourchambault ke managing director the. Unhein father of modern operational management kehte hain. Unka book — General and Industrial Management (1916) — management ki bible maana jaata hai.
WHEN
Industrial revolution ke waqt factoryein badi huin, log zyada hue — tab Fayol ne top management ki perspective se ye 14 principles diye.
WHERE
Fayol ka focus THA top level par — CEO, board, general managers. Isliye unhein top-level management ka father kehte hain (Taylor ke opposite, jo shop floor pe the).
Fayol ke 6 business activities: technical, commercial, financial, security, accounting, managerial. Unhone kaha — managerial activity sabse mushkil hai aur isi ko study karna chahiye. Isi se management apni subject bani.
Wo 14 principles (complete list)
1. Division of Work : specialisation — har aadmi ek kaam me expert
2. Authority & Responsibility : power ke saath zimmedari aati hai
3. Discipline : rules + obedience + respect
4. Unity of Command : ek employee EK boss se instruction
5. Unity of Direction : ek plan, ek head — ek hi goal ke liye
6. Subordination of Individual Interest : organization ka goal upar
7. Remuneration : fair salary — employees + company dono
8. Centralization : authority ka ek jagah hona (balance chahiye)
9. Scalar Chain : formal line of authority top se bottom
10. Order : sahi jagah pe sahi cheez, sahi insaan
11. Equity : kindness + justice — bias nahi
12. Stability of Tenure : job security — bar-bar badlo toh nuksan
13. Initiative : sochne aur shuru karne ki azaadi do
14. Esprit de Corps : team spirit — unity hi shakti hai
Mushkil principles — inhein samjho
- Unity of Command vs Unity of Direction: ek employee ek boss se instruction le (command), aur ek hi plan ke liye ek hi head ho (direction). Command = person level, direction = activity level.
- Scalar chain + Gang plank: authority ki seedhi line (A→B→C) — par emergency mein same level ke log seedhe baat kar sakte hain (gang plank shortcut).
- Subordination of individual interest: tumhara personal fayda vs company ka fayda — company jeeti hai toh sab jeete hain.
- Esprit de corps: French term — "team spirit". Fayol kehta hai unity hi shakti hai, isliye manager ko team ko saath le kar chalna chahiye.
- Initiative: sochne aur plan shuru karne ki azaadi — employees ko idea dene do, wo ownership laate hain.
Fayol aaj bhi relevant hai?
Criticism : aaj ke startups flat structure mein scalar chain chhota hai,
centralization ki jagah decentralization trend hai, bureaucracy badhta nahi chahiye
Par relevance :
Unity of command : aaj bhi ek employee ek manager = clarity
Division of work : specialisation aaj bhi productivity badhata hai
Esprit de Corps : team culture ka core — Google tak yahi maanta hai
Equity & Order : HR policies ki jaan — bias-free workplace
Verdict : principles GENERAL guidelines hain — apply manager ko karna hai
Fayol khud kehta tha — principles flexible hain, rules nahi. Jis situation mein lagu ho, wahan lagao; na ho toh chhod do. Ye line management ka asli spirit hai.
Exercise
Question: Unity of Command ke hisaab se ek employee ek time mein kitne boss se instruction lega? Sirf number daalo.
Question: Fayol ke kitne principles hain? Sirf number daalo.
Question: Management ke father kise kehte hain? Full naam likho.
Common mistakes
- Unity of Command aur Direction confuse karna: Command = ek boss se instruction milna (person). Direction = ek hi plan ka ek hi head (activity). Dono alag hain — exam ka favourite trap.
- Scalar chain ko communication channel samajhna: Scalar chain formal line of AUTHORITY hai, communication ka rasta nahi. Gang plank usi chain ka emergency shortcut hai.
- Esprit de Corps ka matlab bhool jaana: French term hai — team spirit / unity. "Equity" ka matlab fairness hai. Dono ka matlab alag — ek doosre se mat uljhana.
Delhi ki ek furniture firm — har worker ko ek hi aadmi (foreman) hi bolta hai. Ek din owner ne bhi seedha workers ko order diya — production mix ho gaya, delivery late ho gayi. Wahi Fayol ka Unity of Command:
Pehle : worker ← foreman (ek hi command = order clear
Galti : worker ← foreman + owner + manager (confusion)
Result: 2 hafta late delivery = discipline toota- CUET/BBA: "Unity of Command means ___" — ek boss se instruction (classic).
- UGC-NET: Fayol ke 14 principles mein se 3-4 ke meaning match karo.
- MBA interview: scalar chain + gang plank explain karo with example.
- Trap: "Unity of direction means one boss" — galat, wo ek plan/ek head hai.
Fayol ke 14 principles clear. Agla lesson — Taylor Scientific Management — mein dekhenge unke doosre pole (factory level) ka approach.
